occurrenceRemarks Family Scarabaeidae Subfamily Scarabaeinae This id based on a photo from Suriname on iNat. These immense beetles are most active right before dusk. They are a serious problem for mist-netting at that time of day. I think I pulled three out of three nets. They are big enough that they can be extracted alive, but it isn't a fun operation. The whitish spots on the body behind the horn are mites. These beetles are always loaded, with the little depression on the anterior abdomen a favorite spot for the mites. https://www.flickr.com/photos/stoufferlsu/43078305545/in/photostream/ https://www.flickr.com/photos/stoufferlsu/43265305704/in/photostream/
