identificationRemarks | This is pretty strange. Normally, I would say this is a M.g porioni due to the fact that it is within the state of Bahia, where the only subspecies of Megasoma gyas is M.g porioni. However, it shares many physical similarities with M.g. rumbucheri like the short and stubby cephalic horn with heavy bifurcations as well as the stubby lateral thoracic horns. This specimen also appears to occupy the area of Bahia where the Caatinga extends, the habitat for M.g rumbucheri. From what I know, this is the first example of M.g rumbucheri found outside the known range above the Sao Francisco river. This is super cool. |
