occurrenceRemarks | Growing along riverside in large stands. Stems to 3 m high, naked below, grey-olive green, 6 cm or more thick, tapering markedly towards leafy apex where stem is about 1.5 cm thick. Internodes to 19 cm long or more below, becoming ca. 5 mm long at apex. Leaves crowded towards apex of stem, no. per stem from 4 to 8. Petioles, including slightly geniculate apex to 40 cm long. Petiolar sheath with ligule 4-6,5 cm long, tightly rolled in new leaves, soon withering with remainder of sheath, persisting as brown-membranous fragments. Free part of petiole slightly planar on upper surface with very rounded margins. Apex of petiole twisting lamina into vertical or subvertical position. Lamina to 38 cm broad, 46 cm long, with strongly overlapping basal lobes, posterior costulae not denuded, dull green above, paler and gleaming below, costa and primary venation above similar to lamina in colour, very shallowly flattened-prominent. Below costa and primary venation strongly prominent and distinctly whiter than lamina. Peduncle green, 12-13 cm long, 2 cm thick, very obscurely trigonous. spathe shiny outside, dark green flushed maroon-purple in basal part, paler green in upper portion; within rich maroon-red in tube which is coarsly transversely-rugulose, cream-yellow in upper part, 26 cm long. Anthers cream, pistils green-yellow, very pale. Spadix to 24 cm long. Fruit green with brown apices to ovaries which are very swollen below. |
