fieldNotes Sandstone substrate within 10 cm. of surface, with strong smelling humus. Montane rain forest. Trees to 30 m. high, with dense low pole forest on plateau edge. Buttresses & stilts very rare. Nearby a small area of cloud forest 10 m. high, with trees tortuous, covered in thick moss jackets. Lianes rare, palms occasional. Some areas rich in herbaceous vegetation and tree seedlings. Field layer (2m.) locally dominated by Psychotria spp. Bryophytes & small epiphytic ferns common on trunks & rocks.

occurrenceRemarks Small shrub to 9 ft. stem to 1/2" diam. at ground level. Stems glossy olive-green, with purplish-black flushes, especially on adaxial surface & near/on nodes. Leaves dark olive-green adaxially, slightly paler abaxially, matt. Scapes, both primary & secondary, maroon on one side & lime green on the other. Base of corolla tube pinkish-orange, otherwise flower seen open on any one inflorescence. Inflorescence strongly divaricating.
