identificationRemarks | Mollugo verticillata has smooth, round stems with leaves in whorls of 3-8 and a basal rosette that sometimes disappears as the plant matures. Its inflorescences are axillary, umbellate clusters of 3 to 5 pedicellate flowers with 3 to 4 stamens each and five sepals (but no petals) that are white on the upper (adaxial) surface and green on the lower (abaxial) surface. Its fruits are "thin-walled three-chambered" egg-shaped capsules, "slightly surpassing sepals," with reddish-brown seeds. M. brasiliensis, which is not yet in the iNat database, also occurs in Bahia, but its flowers are reported to have 6 to 8 stamens (https://pubag.nal.usda.gov/catalog/1322531). |
